For Kathy Waller

When I published Merriment Monday — you replied — ” I flew to the dictionary for word origin and history.” I thought this humorous since I consider you a master of words and dialogue. Well, I fell upon this last evening and thought — this is for Kathy!

Dictionaries are always fun, but not always reassuring. — M. F. K. Fisher

  1. Wow! This is the first post I’ve ever had! It’s rather exciting.

    M. F. K. Fisher is so right about dictionaries. But this experience eased my mind. Jeff Lindsay’s remark is so reasonable that it’s almost scary, especially when you consider its ramifications for the Church of England. So I looked up both rectory and a similar word and learned they have completely separate origins. Thank goodness.

Thank you for your kind words. As to being a master, I defer to Mr Lindsay. It’s people of his caliber who make those crazy connections and scare lesser minds running for dictionaries.
