Ice Bucket Challenge

The ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one’s head or donating to ALS.

The internet has gone viral with videos of celebrities and other popular personalities taking the “Ice Bucket challenge” and daring others to do the same. But, you don’t need to get wet or chilled, you can DONATE to ALS right here.

So far, ALS has received over twenty million dollars from The Ice Bucket Challenge!

AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS, or ALS, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. It is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It is a progressive, usually fatal, neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement.

Between 1 to 2 people per 100,000 develop it each year. It most commonly strikes people between 40 and 60 years of age, but younger and older people can also develop the disease.  All races and ethnic backgrounds are affected. Men are affected slightly more often than women.

Gary Cooper starred in this touching story of Lou Gehrig called The Pride of the Yankees 1942 . Have you see it? Good movie.

Read Lou Gehrig’s Farewell to Baseball Speech given at Yankee Stadium on July 4th 1939 or you can watch it on video.

Here are PHOTOS of some famous people who have/had this disease.

Hopefully, this latest infusion of big $$$$$ will lead to a treatment and cure very soon!
