Imaginary Friend

hello little girl
you look familiar
I think we’ve met before
when I was small

you had pigtails
and told me secrets
when we read together
and giggled

no one understood things
as well as you

do you remember
the paper dolls
and coloring books
mother bought us?

no I don’t suppose you do
you have no memory
you’re merely a figment of mine

frankly
your presence
is unsettling
I must not indulge you

if anyone sees us talking
my reputation
would be ruined

away! away!

you must understand
I am an adult now
