The Tree

ONCE UPON A TIME … there was a poet who loved sitting beside his favorite tree. Her presence and gentleness inspired him.  She was both friend and confidant.

Beneath her blossoms, he wrote with abandon and from the heart. Occasionally, she would playfully drop petals in his lap while he read aloud.

Then, one day the tree suddenly died.  The poet’s inspiration was gone. Nothing could take her place, and so … he never wrote again.

Many years passed. His works were discovered and published, with each and every poem dedicated to her, as he requested.

He took great solace in believing that she would live on through his prose.
